South Tipperary Autism Support Group was founded in September 2001 in response to a growing demand for parents of children diagnosed with Autism or Asperger’s Syndrome. Both are forms of Autism known as Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The purpose of the group is to give a channel to information and seek support from parents in similar circumstances at a difficult time.
Our group initially started with 9 families involved and has now grown to 68. Today we are still going strong with over 200 families and individuals obtaining support through our support meetings, organised events and activities, social groups and by monthly meetings. We also have members in contact by telephone who do not wish to participate in our open meetings.
Our meetings are held every month and these provide an opportunity for parents to hear the latest information on therapies and allow integration of parents themselves.
We now have a Resource Library and setting for internet access based in the office which is another service that parents and carers can avail of Located in Room 4, Clonmel Community Resource Centre, Kickham St. Clonmel
We hold a Family Day which includes the children with special needs and their siblings and also a Christmas party as it is often the case that a lot of social activities are designed to tackle the very nature of the problems that Autism induces on social integration.

We also hold coffee mornings, cookery classes, pottery classes and exercise classes for the children with special needs and their siblings. We welcome all new members – families and/or individuals – who wish to come to our Support Group meetings, our organised events and activities and our social groups.
Our main aim is to provide Local support, advice and information and empower parents to assist their children with special needs.
ASD/AS in the family
Having a child/adult with ASD or AS can often be very challenging, but it creates an awareness and sensitivity to the needs of other people and the rewards that their special talents can bring, as they are often gifted in music, computers, maths, memory skills, art and cooking.
There is life after a diagnosis of Autism/Asperger’s Syndrome.
Life can be rewarding for the child/adult with Autism/Asperger’s and all the people who have the privilege of knowing and working with them.
